It was September in 2004 when I first heard about him.  Duke was in Calgary when I got the call that this oversized boy needed a last chance foster placement or he would be euthanized.  He had been with his second family who had adopted him through the SPCA.  They had no history other than knowing he was about 4 years old and then one day shortly after being adopted he had snapped at one of the kids.  The family felt they couldn’t keep him because of their children but felt it wasn’t Duke’s fault and he needed a last chance.  After having him assessed in Calgary, it was determined that this boy could be saved but he needed a special place where he would be trained and have lots of one on one time.  I jumped up and down and sent an email asking for him to be sent to me in Ottawa.

Sending an Airedale, let alone an oversized Airedale, on a plane is not something AireCanada ever does but this was a one shot deal.  This had to work or Duke was going to be put down.  Joanne Helm in Calgary took care of getting a crate and making flight arrangements while our treasurer Jim Scott tried to find the dollars to make this work.  One quick email out to all the Airedale lovers we knew and all the sudden funds for Duke were pouring in from across the globe.  We had enough money to fly this big guy and money to spare to deal with his sensitive medical needs.  Duke was hypothyroid and showed all signs of being a Plechner dog (http://www.drplechner.com/home.php) so we knew that he would use these funds quickly but that they would make a difference in making him adoptable.

Upon arriving in Ottawa  I was stunned to see this Airedale who was massive and looked like he was part hippo.  Little did I know that this boy was going to steal our hearts and teach me more than any other foster I have ever had.

This is Duke with Groovy.  Groovy is a standard Airedale female weighing 55lbs

After visiting with our vet and starting Duke on the proper thyroid medication, our next task was obedience classes because he was a puller and was not sure about other dogs.  He passed with flying colours and learned not to dive through my legs and toss me head over heels.  He was so tall and I am a mere 5′ 2″  so that when he went through my legs he picked me up off my feet and I would half stumble and half ride him to regain my footing!

At that time I had 3 of my own dogs, a 15 year old Airedale mix, a 12 year old senior rescue (Bowfsie who was sooooo grumpy) and a young 2 year old Airedale female.  The young one, Groovy LOVED Duke.  They played and cuddled and chased day and night.  Bowfsie and Duke hated each other and we quickly learned that if Duke didn’t like something he made a point of letting everyone know about it.  After a major conflict between Duke and Bowfsie, poor Duke was relegated to living in a muzzle when loose with all the other dogs.

He had so much against him.  Who was going to adopt a big goofy boy with thyroid and hip issues who couldn’t be around children, probably could never live with another dog and who did what he wanted when he wanted.  Let me tell you, when a 120 dog decided to lay down in front of the fridge and not move, he doesn’t move!

Duke had his own room with a crate.  He chose to sleep on the couch!

Well after 6 months of re-training and medical issues being dealt with, I got an email from Barbara Curtiss of NEAR (New England Airedale Rescue) with the perfect family for Duke.  She was so right!!  Dawn and Richard from Vermont drove to Ottawa to meet Dukey.  It was love at first sight.  They sat down on my couch and Duke climbed right up and laid across Dawn’s lap.  He picked them.   In March 2005 Duke moved to his new home and finally got to be the dog he was meant to be.   Boy did he live the life, I just about packed my bags and joined him.

What amazes me to this day is that Duke traveled from Calgary to Ottawa to Vermont but his story traveled the globe as Airedale friends helped make his journey possible.  But now the tale comes to a conclusion.

It is with great sadness that today I received a call letting me know that the King has gone to the rainbow bridge.  His family helped him cross when he was no longer able to live a pain free life due to his hips and mobility issues.  We speculate that Duke was about eleven and a half.  He lived the best Airedale life.  He worked on the farm, he slept in his chair, he cruised around town and three years ago he began a new adventure raising an Airedale sister, Ruby who was his very best friend.  And most importantly he knew the love of a family who cared for him deeply.

My heart goes out to Richard, Dawn and family who gave Dukey so much love and care over the past 6 years. I can only hope that the joy he brought you over
your time together will live in your hearts and minds forever. My heartfelt thanks also goes out to all the friends who helped Duke on this incredible journey.

Thank you for touching so many of our lives Dukey.  You will stay in our hearts  always.

A Letter From Munro

By Steph MacNeil - Ontario Success No Comments »

Dear Steph,

I would like to thank you for my stay at your excellent Bed & Breakfast.  I felt very welcome in your home and the hospitality was most generous. I would also like to thank you for your recommendation for my future accommodations.  Since arriving here, I have learned many new things, but overall I’ve found the adjustment quite easy.  There is another dog here, Penta, who quickly became a good friend and companion.  She has been very helpful at explaining thing that were unfamiliar to me.

One of these was that the two mobile, furry toys weren’t toys at all: they were cats.  As you know, I’d never really encountered these before, and it took some

effort to resist playing with them.  (Apparently, they don’t like that.)  Did you know that they squeak, as well?   And hiss.  Anyway, I’ve got the idea now, and I must say that they squeak and hiss less than they used to.  Perhaps the batteries are running down.

The people here are very keen on exercise, so I have no doubt that I’ll stay in shape.  It’s been fun exploring new places and also making new friends in the neighbourhood.  I’ve also been given a new bed, leash, etc., and there seems to be a ready supply of sticks and chews!
They tell me that I’ll be going to school with Penta, so that we can have a ‘refresher’ of all the things we know.  We walk well together, but apparently it causes alarm when I develop plans of my own at the dog park.  I always come back, though, so I don’t really see what the problem is!  Not to worry, I’m happy to go along with the plan – it could be fun!

I’ve borrowed some pictures to give you an idea of my new friends – hope you like them!

All the best and thanks again,
munro

Munroe – Ottawa area

By Steph MacNeil - Ontario Success No Comments »

If you are in or near the Ottawa area and would like the chance to have a beautiful 6 year old (7 in 3 weeks) AireBoy join your family then Munroe is for you.  This healthy boy is a registered Airedale, he is neutered, up to date on his shots and recently had a dental cleaning.  He is good with other dogs, very funny and well trained.   We aren’t sure about cats since he has never lived with one but does like to bark at them.

Munroe is in a heartbreaking situation.  He is loosing his home due to an illness in the family and the family are devistated at having to say good bye to this beautiful boy.  Can you be his and their Angel by taking him into your family?

Not only are we looking for a permanent home for Munroe, we also need an Airedale experience foster home.  Please contact me, Stephanie (rebels_mommy@yahoo.com), immediately if you think you’re an ideal family for fostering Munroe.

If you are considering adopting Munroe, please complete the adoption application and I will be in touch.

Thanks for thinking of a rescue,

Stephanie

***** Congratulations to Munroe and Belinda and family on the adoption of this beautiful boy!*******  Pictures to follow!

Brie is a wonderful girl who gets along with all shapes and sizes of dogs.  She is very playful so it would be great for her to have an active owner or to be with someone who has another young and playful dog. She is well mannered and will naturally follow you around.  She loves to be bathed and brushed and is always happy, friendly and a joy to have around.   She does like to jump up on people and she pulls on leash but training will curb this activity.  A fenced yard is a must for this lovely active girl. This Airedale loves her food and treats so training will not be a problem.  She would do really well in obedience classes and obedience lessons will be a condition of adoption.  Brie is intact and will be spayed prior to adoption.

If you are interested in adopting Brie, please submit our online application form

Sarah

By Maureen - BC Success No Comments »

Sixteen-month-old Sarah came into Ontario rescue on April 25/10. She had been bathed, but was horribly matted because she had never been groomed. It was believed that she had allergies and she had open sores on different parts of her body. She was loved but her family were moving and also expecting a new baby. They felt that they were not giving her the time she deserved.

Sarah is a lively girl that will sit, shake a paw and wait for a release command for her meals. She’s a sweetheart, needing some one that could give her the exercise and leadership that she’s been lacking. Because Sarah is a busy girl, without this leadership and exercise, she could easily become a nuisance.

Sarah is now living in a great home where she is being walked and played with. She has a new Mom and Dad and a Wheaton Terrier brother who has attended many obedience classes. Her skin issues are being addressed and she is starting to feel comfortable and happy with her forever family.

On April 24/10, Holly took a car ride to meet her new family in Brantford. Due to a divorce and a move to smaller living quarters, her original family had to say goodbye after six years to a wonderful affectionate Airedale.

Holly is a lady with impeccable manners, a lovely disposition and a dainty “aire”. She arrived, ready to meet her future family, wearing a bright new red collar and lead, the better to show off her wonderful grooming . When she was introduced to the couple who had offered her a home, her tail went up and she was happy to discover she would have a brother, a younger Airedale boy who was excited to have an Airedale sister to play with.

Holly’s forever home is wondering why they waited so long to add another Airedale to their family!

Due to a move to a smaller residence and not being able to properly exercise him, Ozzy’s owner is having to surrender him. Ozzy needs an active family that will walk or jog with him on a daily bases. He loves these activities and looks forward to them.  Although not destructive he gets bored when not exercised and left to his on devices. A fenced in back yard to call his own is a must.  Ozzy is an  affectionate dog with gentlemanly manners. He does not mark in the house or beg at the table. He sleeps on his bed at night. He is well trained and socialized with other dogs due to his attendance at Doggy Day Care. Like many of our Airedale kids Ozzy does cower or yelp if he fears something. He needs time to feel secure in his surroundings. He does enjoy being petted and fussed over but  he does not enjoy having his tummy rubbed unless he asks for the attention. He will get up and walk away. On the other hand he loves his bath and being groomed.
Ozzy is a healthy, 7 year old, neutered Male who needs a family to love and adore him and give him the activity he needs. He needs a home without young children.
If you are  in Ontario and  looking for a good looking mid sized Airedale gentleman  to love and enjoy an active life with,  please fill in an application and contact Barbara Durance  at bpdurance@rogers.com

Hello my name Sky. I am an Airedale mix. Airedales are the largest of the Terriers and are known to be alert and energetic. With regular grooming, I may shed very little. This is true of the Airedale breed. I am a playful girl who loves to go for walks and play with my toys. People tell me that my eyes are those of an old soul. They are kind and warm. I walk well on the leash and have a lovely temperament. I can be choosy as to which dogs I get along with. I should remain on the leash in the company of other dogs, for the time being. I may not be quite ready to romp around the dog parks just yet. It’s very possible, that out of the kennel environment, I may react differently. It may just be the stress of being in the shelter that’s making me reactive to some the other dogs. Under the right guidance, with some training and genuine TLC, I know I will make a great companion dog. I can’t wait to meet my new owner. Are you the one for me? Please say yes.
Sky is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.

Sky has been adopted by a very special family who are taking her home even after learning that she has just been diagnosed with cancer.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED FOR THIS DOG. HE HAS BEEN PLACED IN A NEW HOME!

Handsome Teddy Bear would love to have a new home before he reaches the age of five months on Feb. 10.

This Airedale pup lavishes affection on all he meets. He’s also very smart and, in the past two weeks, has learned to sit, to recall, to walk on leash, and to understand the concept of house training.  He likes  men, women and children, and is on his way to being well-socialized.  He plays enthusiastically with the Airedales who live in his present foster home. Although we haven’t checked this out, we suspect Teddy would be fine with cats as well. We think he would love to have older children (age 10+) or other dogs in his new home for companionship and fun.

Teddy Bear is in excellent health. He has had his puppy vaccinations and a vasectomy which will prevent him from reproducing without interfering with his physical or mental development. Teddy’s tail is undocked and he retains his dewclaws.  He possesses excellent conformation and has the nicest coat we have ever seen on an Airedale puppy.

We like Teddy’s temperament very much. While he is slightly wary at first, he soon adapts to new situations, is consistently friendly and behaves politely. He learns very quickly what behaviors will not be accepted and which are fine. Considering he is a teething puppy, Teddy, if he is supervised, does not seem to chew randomly or cause significant amounts of household damage.  He currently sleeps in a crate but doubtless will be fine on a dog bed near his owner when he grows up a wee bit more.

We would favor a home for Teddy Bear where he will be raised holistically with a view to his enjoying a long, happy life. A securely fenced yard is a requirement as it is for all Airedales placed by AireCanada. Teddy Bear is a real “people dog” and, in our estimation, will do best with a family where someone is home much of the time.

If you are interested in adopting Teddy Bear, please complete and submit the application form . If you would like further information about Teddy Bear, please  contact Maureen Scott < generic.puppy@gmail.com >

Rosie in NS

By Maureen - Nova Scotia Success 7 Comments »

Rosie is a beautiful, 5 1/2 year old Airedale Terrier who has not had a very good start in life.

She has had at least one litter of puppies and possibly more.  She is one of the most gentle Airedales I have had the pleasure if taking into rescue.
She came to AireCanada a woolly bear, almost unrecognizable as an Airedale and as you can see from her pictures she looks very much like the Airedale she is. She was also intact and had a lump the size of a golf ball almost at the base of her neck,

She has been spayed, the lump has been removed and she is micro-chipped.  Rosie has not had much exercise in her life and consequently she has very little muscle mass.

A FENCED YARD  is a must for her adoption.  She is great with other dogs, does not like cats and is great with children, men and woman.  However because of her size  adoption will only be considered with families that have older children or families that already have a dog and the children are dog savvy.

Rosie has been adopted and is now very happy in her new home
