Sadly, thanks to various statutes, laws and legislation, online fundraisers such as Pennies for Airedales are no longer legal. Pennies, despite its immense popularity and value to AireCanada's rescued dogs, is gone for good. In its place, we hope to interest you in a new look for our online store -- shopping cart ease, better payment options and lots of new stock, some of it one of a kind and very collectible. Other fundraising options will be available, as well, to help the Airedales that need new homes. Watch this blog and the AireCanada home page as well as various Airedale forums and Facebook for announcements!

Hi
I'm just wondering if we would even be considered for Barkley since we don't have a fenced yard. We live out in the country and own a young Bernese/standard poodle mix and 6 cats. Raffi get a big long walk 2x per day and sometimes a visit to a nearby dog park for play time. If he just goes out to hang out, I tie him up and he's o.k. with that. I never go away and leave him tied outside. I'm retired now, so I'm home a lot. I have experience with diabetic animals and have no qualms about taking blood levels and giving shots. I also have a daughter who is a vet tech and that is really helpful sometimes!
What do you think? Where is Barkley? We wouldn't be able to consider adopting him until mid October.
cheers

I remember when Duke arrived in Ottawa, Steph had many entertaining stories to tell us about this big boy. I think we all were more than over joyed when he not only found his forever home, but one that seemed like the best Airedale home ever. Thank you for loving Duke.

I, too, understand the wonderful ability of Airedales to serve as Therapy Dogs.
In 1999, a friend of mine with a Beagle asked if I'd like to take my very friendly Airedale, Jay, to visit a seniors' home in Thunder Bay as part of a program, then called, Pat-A-Pet. It was not a dog-exclusive program as cats, rabbits and pot-bellied pigs were part of the entourage, which gentle Jay enjoyed being in the company of very much.
Any seniors wishing to spend time with the animals would congregate in a central open room, either under their own direction or with the help of an attendant. While I stood and listened to someone speak, my Airedale sat next to a gentleman in a wheel chair who was attended to by his two adult daughters. The elderly gentleman reached down, gently touched Jay on the head and quietly said, "that's and Airedale, isn't it?' Before I could turn to respond, one of the daughters cried out saying "Oh, my God!" I quickly turned to see her standing with tears in her eyes and asked if everything was okay. She said "Those are the first words Dad has spoken in 8 months! He had a stroke and we thought he would never speak again". People around us were astounded that Jay had had such an impact on him. We learned that this gentleman had owned Airedales for many years and the joy of seeing one again literally brought him out of his cocoon.
Needless to say, we were hooked. Jay was tested and enrolled in the next St.John Ampulance Therapy Dog program, passing it with flying colours. We went on as a team for many years, visiting local seniors' homes.
Now I have Lizzie. She is a rescue Airedale who was abused and neglected. She is still young and has just passed her first obedience class. I brought her in early July, to visit my Dad in a seniors' home in Fort Frances. She was the highlight of the day for many seniors, responding in such a positive and happy way, I am convinced she will also be a wonderful Therapy Dog. After her next set of obedience classes, we will visit St.John Ambulance to have her tested and evaluated. I'm sure she, too, will make a wonderful Therapy Dog as she shows all the signs. Her smiling Airedale face and happy demeanor will be sure to bring joy to many.

What a beautiful story for a giant 'dale! It brought tears to my eyes of both joy and sadness. Kudos and many blessings be to all who helped Duke to reform and find that wonderful forever home in Vermont...it's clear his family there gave him a life filled with lots of love and great care.

Oh Duke. How well we remember those early days with Steph, Bowfsie and Groovy, as you made your way into our hearts right around the world. What joy we knew when Richard and Dawn fell in love with you, as we had all done, and brought you the love, the security, the happiness and the fulfillment of your life as it was meant to be.

And Steph, our eternal gratitude for never giving up on him, sharing him with us, and letting us help in his journey to the most perfect life he could have wished. May your own heart be eased knowing that you gave him that chance.
Go safely, Duke ... travel well, dear boy. We'll see your huge star tonight. And we'll hear the Airespirits calling you as you cross the Bridge ..."Here comes Duke!"
